Lauren Canavan

Lauren currently serves as producer at News 12 Brooklyn.

She began her journey in the newsroom as a freelance producer in March of 2024, just months after graduating college. By June of 2024, Lauren was offered a full-time position, entrusted with producing the 6:30am and 8:30am shows for as part of “Mornings on 12.” She braved the 1am wake up call for about a year before being offered the opportunity to produce the dayside broadcasts on News12 Brooklyn, which air at 12:30pm and 5:30pm daily.

Her work producing both morning-side and dayside news has allowed her the rare opportunity to hone a diverse skillset, applicable to different styles of broadcast, all while gaining experience with breaking news coverage.

Her day-to-day responsibilities include writing scripts, copy-editing reporter scripts, as well as stacking and lining her two daily broadcasts. She then serves as a line producer, counting in anchors, reporters, and meteorologists to ensure that the show airs as planned.

During her time studying at Stony Brook University’s School of Communication & Journalism, Lauren committed herself to promoting the arts at a STEM-dominated school. As a music editor at The Stony Brook Press, and as a reporter at The Stony Brook Media Group, she tirelessly produced multimedia coverage of the school’s ensembles and exhibitions. She co-founded “The Bash”, a student-run music festival that features diverse local up-and-coming artists. Lauren’s efforts earned her the 2023 Catherine M. Ayscue Memorial Scholarship, which is endowed to SBU student who – like Catherine Ayscue – is a prolific writer and lover of the arts.

Lauren’s love for all things music drove her to become a trained audio engineer, DJ and host of her own radio show on WUSB, the largest commercial-free radio station on Long Island. She ran campaigns on the station’s social media pages, garnering a record number of members to join the student sector. While she wasn’t dancing and singing in Control Room 1, she was producing weekly live news broadcasts (along with her peers) out of Control Room 2.

In addition to the arts, Lauren has reported on topics in science, politics, health, features, sports and culture. As a sophomore, she traveled to New Mexico with a select group of Stony Brook journalism students to report on the findings of NASA scientists who were testing new equipment on barren volcanic terrain that simulates the lunar landscape.

Her radio voicing and written reporting has been published by WSHU Public Radio, an NPR affiliate that covers Southern Connecticut and Eastern Long Island. Lauren’s name has also appeared in various local publications across New York’s Westchester County.
